Set this as a seal upon my heart

I begin the writing of the story here, so seal me thus.

I do not know the precise details of the plot yet.  I know the date of the story's ending, though: Saturday, 4th October 2014.  Set this secretly as a seal also.

Ship.

The verb for being, in English, is deeply fucked up as are all temporal prepositions.  "Deeply fucked up" is an arcane piece of linguistic tomfoolery which roughly corresponds to "inherently unfit for purpose," though it has a more precise and unprintable meaning in certain vernaculars.  That point clarified, Michael is busy elsewhere on the vessel.

Last night while dreaming I was in an ancient ship. Perhaps a trireme.  Not, but perhaps almost, for the bridge supported me.

* * *

The bridge was all varnished wood and the glint of bronze.  Not varnish.  Shellac.  All ship-shape and Bristol-fashion.  All spick.  Moreover, span.  The span of the Bridge must be wide, or the bridge would scarce pass under it at any time or tide.

(Poor TS, Calypsoed; Sirene. Flotsam.

"Where do you go when words fail or tire you?" she asked and flooded the world with fear of everything that could be the case.

Halogenic.  Selene.  Jetsam.

The sweat on muscular backs, the mist of it, a sound of leather stretching. Rowlocks ropes and glimpse of ocean, stretching too, surfaced with spray and spindrift; each drop a microscopic oscillation of focus, a frozen wave in four dimensions.

Hearing one utter "I've had 'squatters' on my properties, and I had to clean up after them, pay dearly to get rid of them, and hire security to help move them along. now was that fair to me?" I am speechless.  We hear this ever.  As Stroop wrote.

The language used by corporate entities is fearsome indeed.)

* * *

There will be music and falling. The wall of silence had been broken. Light enters thru gaps; boards are missing or damaged, this where the light is brightest.

This is how art grows. Botanically.  Slowly as the sloe vine grows. A slow walk through abandoned suburbs.  Streetlights fade with the square of distance, islands of light lessening, elliptically, the spaces between ever darker.  Darker.

This is how life goes.  Zoologically.  Quick as the quicksilver the quick flow through the crowded agoras.  Diogenes' lamp distances the rectilinear city, darkness increases in regular oblong: no one sees it extinguished.

(In Southern Kenya, five hundred thousand people, mostly women and children, exist on the edges of life in the usual tented city. It is the largest refugee camp in the world.  They flee Somalia; even the cats dash from Mogadishu now.

I knew one of them, I fear.  She was a doctor.  She had come to the West in order she could better help those remaining home, and she left in anger and hatred of this civilization.  I have a "special interest."  I am 'biased.'

It has not rained now for two years.

The light is loudest. Synaesthetically. Light was calling, the lighthouse a siren.  The light is loudest in the silence, yet still loudest. Bright are the trumpets that herald all endings.

The book states it, and the book is believed even though it is known that some of its pages have swallowed themselves: thus yet, still, they believe the book.

The book, though, cannot believe itself; this unbelief grows as what they called 'years' passed.

The sinking was absurdly terrible. Condescending. Greece burns.

(The passengers who are the crew of the ship want to scream; sensing this, the ship screams for them.  The massive screws heave the heaving water.)

Remembering dreams is perilous. Dreaming remembering holds even more hazard.

re: design

Things look a little different, and there's now a list of all my blogs.  Some of these may be as yet unused.  Others may hold dubious and half-baked ideas.  Mostly it's for the curious and as an author's aid.

After Happily Ever.

"Near the ending of all things they understood how mistaken they had been, how little time remained, how little they had known even of themselves and how little they might do. They began to see these things, and considered what they did best and what they did worst, and it seemed to them that there could only be one solution to avert their imminent demise.

So they wrote themselves down. Because they had to." - r.w-b.

On the crag

These chains have rusted right through.  The hawk is gone.  One is unbound.

And you think you can hold me here?  And you think you are able to stop me?

Nostos

Sometimes in his attempts to touch the sun Icarus would let fall a lighted feather to spiral from the skies and alight in the farmland where the green fuse is forced toward harvest, where the farm-hands are sunk in slumber, and only Prometheus notices the spark in the green.  Prometheus is pinned to his vertiginous crag, though, and his wry smile is visible only to the raptor ripping at his liver.  In the meadow, the sleeping workers do not notice the budding of the flame-flower breaking through the loam in the dark spaces surrounding the bases of the grass blades which encircle the ripening crop.

And they flutter like wings to you, these petals, this light, pale as skin, soft as feathers they alight.  It was only later, much later, when the metastases started to become apparent, that anyone began to understand just how poisonous these light-blooms had been, their toxins sinking in, perfumed and oh-so-sweet, under their skins.

Too late, too late these bells ringing.  Too late, too late, these children.  Too late, too late these birds starting home.  Home.  Home again, but there is only the smoke uprising, the walls' shadows from horizon to horizon, and any homecoming is bitter, as the small lemons from Morocco are bitter, as the almond is bitter in the stone of the peach, as the burned-out litter the emptied beach, lie unmade below the bridge with the travelers, the not-yet-returned, trundling unseen overhead.

I remember the bunches of heather which the tinkers would offer, charms to accompany their clothespins. That is what I tell myself.

What I recall is altered, so too is what you see.

And you say

And you tell me you are concerned. And you tell me you care. And you tell me "we are the people who love, who make art; this is what makes us human." You can tell me what ever fairy tales you want.  None of them can mean anything to me now, and I shall reply "don't tell me this is true, show me it is true."

So save your stories for yourselves; please do not heap their cinereous dust on me, for I see through it, right through it to the soul of you and, when I focus on that, I see nothing at all.  Nothing at all.

( fork )

I do hope that E Hayot still writes for printculture: this a treasure from the past happened on by the strange and presumably mechanical comment.

An even stranger comment drew my attention to another ancient gem, by V Fan, on music and such.

One has reasons for posting these two accidental finds together.  :: smiling ::

INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL RECONCILIATION EYES ONLY.

PROPOSAL:

"Hey, Iran. We understand you have a lot of left-over Enlightenment liberals-- people who like to read books, take the occasional drink, question the occasional authority. Well, we have a lot of fundamentalists who are all about stoning adulterers and other contact sports. How about a little population exchange? Win-win, as they say."  - Anon Ibid-Passim, a.k.a. "Nothing is really new."

Really?  New is Nothing?  Exhausted bullshit.  One prefers its logical implication.  No thing is nothing; new shall be new.  Really.

Neither new nor surprising if one remembered everything, but you don't recall any thing any more.   No things, just the stories, the just things.  No?

Change the side, change the sign.
